Pediatric Dentistry

Overview

Pediatric Dentistry specializes in the dental and oral health care of children from infancy through adolescence. It focuses on the unique challenges and needs of young patients, including developmental monitoring, preventive education, and treatment of dental diseases. Pediatric dentists are equipped to provide a comforting, understanding environment for children, encouraging positive attitudes towards oral health from an early age.

Pediatric Dentistry
Our approach to care

During your child’s dental visit, we will thoroughly review their medical and dental history to identify any contributing factors to oral health issues. A comprehensive oral examination will be conducted to assess the health of your child’s teeth, gums, and mouth, looking for signs of early tooth decay, gum disease, and alignment issues. Digital X-rays may be taken to provide a detailed view of your child’s teeth and jaw alignment, helping to identify problems not visible during the physical examination. We will evaluate your child’s risk for developing dental problems, including cavities, gum disease, and orthodontic concerns, to tailor preventive and treatment plans effectively. Our team will also conduct an assessment of your child’s oral habits, such as thumb sucking, to offer advice and interventions aimed at promoting healthy dental development and preventing malocclusion.

For cavities and early tooth decay, treatments include fluoride treatments to remineralize enamel and dental fillings to restore the affected teeth. In cases of pediatric gum disease, we provide thorough cleanings and, if necessary, advanced care to manage infection and protect oral health. To address thumb sucking and its effects on teeth alignment, we offer behavioral strategies, appliances, or referrals to specialists for habit cessation. Dental emergencies are managed with prompt care, including pain management, temporary restorations, or emergency extractions to preserve oral health and comfort. For orthodontic concerns detected during screenings, we may recommend monitoring, early intervention with orthodontic appliances, or referral to an orthodontist for comprehensive treatment planning.

Schedule regular dental checkups for your child every six months to monitor their oral health development and catch any issues early. Encourage good oral hygiene practices at home, including brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day, to prevent cavities and gum disease. Limit sugary snacks and drinks in your child’s diet to reduce the risk of tooth decay and promote overall health. Address harmful oral habits early, such as thumb sucking or excessive pacifier use, with positive reinforcement and, if necessary, professional intervention. Ensure your child wears protective gear, like mouthguards, during sports or recreational activities to prevent dental injuries.

Upon arrival, we’ll discuss any concerns you have about your child’s oral health and review their dental and medical history to provide personalized care. Your child will undergo a gentle, thorough dental examination to assess the health of their teeth, gums, and mouth, with explanations provided in a child-friendly manner. We’ll discuss the findings with you, outlining any treatment needs or preventive measures recommended to maintain your child’s oral health. Educational advice will be offered on improving your child’s oral hygiene practices at home, including brushing, flossing, and healthy eating habits. If follow-up treatments or interventions are needed, we’ll schedule these appointments and provide detailed information on what to expect, ensuring you and your child are fully informed and comfortable with the care plan.
