Sleep Medicine

Overview

Sleep Medicine focuses on diagnosing and treating sleep disorders and disturbances. This field addresses conditions such as insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy, aiming to improve sleep quality and overall health. Through a combination of lifestyle changes, medical devices, and sometimes medication, sleep specialists work to normalize sleep patterns and enhance patients’ daytime functioning and well-being.

Sleep Medicine
Our approach to care

Schedule a consultation with us if you’re experiencing sleep problems or daytime fatigue to discuss your symptoms and sleep habits. We may recommend a sleep study (polysomnography) to monitor your sleep stages, movements, breathing patterns, and brain waves overnight. Keep a sleep diary for a couple of weeks to track your sleep patterns and behaviors that might affect sleep. Expect to undergo specific tests for conditions like narcolepsy, which might include the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). We’ll evaluate your medical history and current medications, as some health issues and drugs can impact sleep.

For obstructive sleep apnea, we often prescribe CPAP therapy or an oral appliance to keep your airway open during sleep. If you have insomnia, cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) will be a key part of your treatment plan, possibly alongside medication. For RLS, we might suggest iron supplements or medications that affect dopamine in the brain. Narcolepsy treatments include scheduled naps and medications to help you stay awake during the day and manage other symptoms. To address circadian rhythm disorders, we’ll work on lifestyle modifications and possibly use light therapy or melatonin to adjust your sleep-wake cycle.

Adhere to a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends, to regulate your sleep-wake cycle. Create a bedtime routine that promotes relaxation, such as reading or taking a warm bath. Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet to encourage better sleep. Limit exposure to screens before bedtime, as the blue light can disrupt your sleep cycle. Avoid caffeine and heavy meals close to bedtime, which can interfere with sleep. Exercise regularly but not too close to bedtime, as it can energize you. If using CPAP for sleep apnea, ensure the mask fits well and the device is maintained according to our instructions.

You’ll discuss your sleep issues and health history with us, focusing on how your sleep problem affects your daily life. We’ll review your sleep diary together, analyzing your sleep patterns and habits. Be prepared for a physical examination to identify any underlying conditions affecting sleep. We may schedule a sleep study to diagnose your condition accurately, explaining how to prepare for it. Together, we’ll develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs, including behavioral strategies, medical devices, or medication. Follow-up visits will be important to monitor your progress and adjust treatment as necessary, ensuring the best possible outcome for your sleep health.
