Gynecologic Oncology

Overview

Gynecologic Oncology concentrates on diagnosing and treating cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian, uterine/endometrial, cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers. Gynecologic oncologists are specialized surgeons who also use medical and radiation therapies to treat these cancers, providing comprehensive care tailored to the unique needs of each patient.

Gynecologic Oncology
Our approach to care

A thorough evaluation, including a review of symptoms and medical history, will be conducted to accurately diagnose gynecologic cancers, utilizing advanced imaging techniques and biopsies. HPV testing and Pap smears are essential tools for detecting precancerous conditions or early-stage cervical cancer, guiding prevention and early intervention strategies. Genetic testing may be recommended for patients with a family history of gynecologic cancers, particularly ovarian cancer, to assess risk and inform screening and prevention strategies. A multidisciplinary team approach ensures comprehensive care, with gynecologic oncologists collaborating with pathologists, radiologists, and genetic counselors to develop an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan. Patients will receive detailed information about their diagnosis and treatment options, ensuring understanding and involvement in care decisions from the outset.

Surgical options, including minimally invasive techniques, are often the first line of treatment for gynecologic cancers, aiming to remove tumors and affected tissues while preserving as much function as possible. Chemotherapy may be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with surgery, depending on the cancer type and stage, with regimens personalized to each patient’s needs. Radiation therapy is carefully planned to target cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue, using advanced technologies to improve precision and outcomes. Targeted therapies and immunotherapy offer new hope, especially for advanced or recurrent cancers, focusing treatment on specific genetic markers or the immune system’s ability to fight cancer. Fertility-preserving treatments are available for eligible patients, particularly those with early-stage disease or gestational trophoblastic disease, allowing for family planning post-treatment.

Adhere to all treatment protocols and follow-up care recommendations, actively participating in your treatment journey to achieve the best outcomes. Report any side effects or new symptoms to your gynecologic oncologist promptly, allowing for timely management and adjustment of your treatment plan. Engage in supportive care services, including nutritional counseling, physical therapy, and mental health support, to address the comprehensive impact of cancer and its treatment. Stay informed about your condition and treatment options, utilizing resources and education provided by your care team to make informed decisions about your care. Consider participation in clinical trials, which can provide access to new treatments and contribute to advancing knowledge and care for future patients.

Your visit will begin with a compassionate consultation to understand your health history, symptoms, and any concerns, establishing a basis for personalized care. Diagnostic tests and procedures will be explained in detail, ensuring you are fully informed and comfortable with each step of the diagnostic process. A personalized treatment plan will be discussed, outlining the recommended approach, expected outcomes, and potential side effects, empowering you to make informed decisions about your care. Supportive care and resources will be introduced, focusing on your physical and emotional well-being throughout treatment and beyond. A plan for regular follow-up and monitoring will be established, ensuring ongoing support and care tailored to your evolving needs and progress.
