Mohs Surgery

Overview

Mohs Surgery is a highly effective surgical technique used for the treatment of skin cancer, offering the highest cure rate by meticulously removing cancerous cells layer by layer. This procedure is particularly valuable for cancers located in cosmetically sensitive areas, as it spares as much healthy tissue as possible while ensuring complete cancer removal. Our approach is focused on precision and patient comfort, ensuring the best aesthetic and functional outcomes.

Mohs Surgery
Our approach to care

A pre-surgical consultation will include a review of your medical history and a physical examination of the skin cancer. Imaging studies may be conducted for larger or more aggressive tumors to assess the extent of the cancer. A biopsy of the lesion may have been performed prior to recommending Mohs surgery, confirming the type of skin cancer.

Mohs surgery is performed under local anesthesia, minimizing patient discomfort. Each layer of tissue removed is immediately examined under a microscope for cancer cells, continuing until no cancer cells are detected. Reconstruction of the surgical site is considered immediately following the procedure, using techniques that provide the best cosmetic and functional outcomes.

Follow post-operative care instructions closely to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection. Attend all follow-up appointments for wound care and to monitor for any signs of cancer recurrence. Protect your skin from the sun using sunscreen, protective clothing, and seeking shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Examine your skin monthly for any new or changing lesions and report these to your dermatologist promptly. Maintain a healthy lifestyle to support your overall well-being and immune system function.

We’ll discuss the Mohs surgery process, including what to expect during and after the procedure. You’ll receive detailed instructions on how to prepare for surgery and care for the surgical site post-operatively. We’ll outline the potential outcomes of the surgery and discuss reconstruction options, if necessary. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and express any concerns you may have about the procedure, recovery, and follow-up care. Our team is committed to supporting you throughout the process, ensuring you feel informed, comfortable, and cared for every step of the way.
